REOW SANGCHEY, RADHI

ACCOUNT OF REO SANG CHOE

Ky abje Garab Rinpoche and Kyabje Yangsi Rinpoche presided over the Sang-Smoke offering (Reow Sang Chey) at Renchen Bumpa, Radhi Gewog under Tashigang Dzongkhag. The Renchen Bumpa, also popular known as Jomo Doksa, sits at an altitude of over ten thousand feets, above the floor of Rangjung Valley.

The Sang offerings are made to please the senses of Bodhisattvas and local spirits; for example, households will burn incense as an offering to the protective spirits of nearby mountains. The Sang in Bhutan was a ground mix of aromatic plants, such as juniper, cypress and others. This mixture was burned on the embers of a fire is a daily practice in most Bhutanese homes.

It is important to understand offerings are intended to be gifts to sentient beings that are pleasant to the senses. This includes offerings that are beautiful to the eye, delicious to the sense of taste, sweet to the ear, pleasant to the tactile sense and aromatic to the sense of smell.

And later in the afternoon, beautiful and colourful prayer flags (dhar) are one of the most prominent features of Bhutan hosted by Kyabje Rinpoche. These Buddhist prayer flags can be found fluttering throughout the Kingdom. They are considered sacred and holy and should be treated with utmost respect.

Most of the prayer flags that come in various shapes, colours and sizes. From mountain passes, bridges, monasteries, stupas, temples, mountain peaks and homes, one is greeted with the sacred prayer flags everywhere.
